MxTube 2 Features. - UPDATED (Apr 6)
I am about to start MxTube 2, I would like to know what new features you all want. Please post all feature requests in a comment of this post. Features I like, will be added to this post and will be included in MxTube2.

Update 4/6/08: I am NOT able to put reverse sync into MxTube 2. Videos will still be played through MxTube, but an option to copy them to the iPod app will be available. Therefore, video reordering & renaming will be included features of MxTube 2.

Update 4/5/08: I have updated the feature list below. Keep feature requests coming, it will only make MxTube2 better! Features that will most likely not make it into the cut are video reordering and audio only downloads. I cannot request audio only from youtube’s servers , and as for video reordering, if videos show in the iPod.app MxTube won’t have control over their order.

Search:
- Mobile YouTube (What the YouTube.app & MxTube 1.0 use) and YouTube.com Search. Videos from the YouTube.com search will be converted after download, Mobile YouTube will act like it did in MxTube 1.0.
- Video descriptions.
- “Play in YouTube app” button - Watch before you download.
- Video id lookup (youtube.com/?v=maxWVCW-Lqs).
Videos:
- Videos in the iPod.app.
Reverse sync if possible.- Video renaming.
- Video sharing (Email, and other options).
- Video reordering (In MxTube only).
Downloads:
- Pause & Resume Downloads.
- Download Videos from YouTube.app Bookmarks.

PS: Support for other movie sites will not be possible. Also, all bugs will be fixed in MxTube2 including the premature download bug, there is no need to post about these in the comments section.

I would like to be able to choose where I want a video from. I know I shouldnt write comments about this but thts not going to stop me. Please make that possible.
Posting that comment just made all possibilities EVER for other sites being on MxTube not possible.

First of all i love mxtube! Please try and put the full name of the video as some of the video names are too long which cant be read on mxtube 1. Mxtube 1 also does not show the whole clip after it has been downloaded. Thanks alot anyways mx tube is the best app anyways!

i like your mxtube. but try to tweak some download error and put the details of each video so it’ll help users decide before downloading. try to add videos from “Google Video” which has lots of choices. Add features like pause and resume downloads per video or on ques. i got some errors like it - restarts or shuts down after opening or hitting search.

If MX tube 2 with all the new features is likely to take some considerable time, maybe an MX tube 1.2 just with the download failure fixed ?
I would be perfectly happy with that alone.
If all of the features up there came true, then this would be really really awesome!
I love mxtube, and it would be great if:
- you can preview before downloading
- pause and resume downloads
- create a playlist (specialy useful for music videoclips)
- files accesible from iphone internal player, so i can “extend” my playlists
- posibility to download, or at least view videos “not alowed” for embedding (for example, you wont find this video on mxtube http://es.youtube.com/watch?v=ktUSIJEiOug)

MxTube FTW!! this app is amazingly amazing. Now that my youtube app says ” cannot connect to youtube”, this is the only video source I have now….anyways I think the only feature that should be put in should be the choice to pause downloads. Oh! and a title page and comment page just like the youtube website

I like the idea of the app but there’re some problems with in mxtube 1
1. it crashes a lot specially if the vid i’am downloading bigger than 3 mb
2. if i download part of video I can’t continue the downloading later I have to download it again
That’s it and still the best app ever
I know this is off the topic and everything.
But what would be pretty cool is if you made an application that let you see the song lyrics, like you go to that application and choose a song from your library. And it’ll show the lyrics

MxTube is awesome… can’t wait for the premature download issue to get resolved (even does this for me on a stable wifi). For version 2:
1. More details sort of thing, so we can see descriptions,, etc.
2. Playlists would be a cool idea.
3. Some sort of background downloading feature… so I can select videos I want while on Edge, but it only grabs them when I get to a wifi network.
Otherwise, this is an awesome app, and something Apple should have thought of originally.
Props to the coder, MxWeas don’t listen to all these foolish flaming noobs, we coders tend to get that alot ;). They will keep complaining even if you did what!
And noobs, stop asking for features, they will be made when they are ready to be.

I dont know if that was a bug or something in mxtube 1.0 but I like that you can turn, when playing a video, your iphone or ipod in sleep mode and the music will continue to play. I think that is awsome and i hope it will stay in mxtube 2.0. You cant do that when playing a video in youtube! Please keep that!! Thanks
I absolutely LOVE this app! I was just wondering if it’s possible to have these two new features:
1) Drag & Drop Reorganize: so we could order the videos however we wanted
2) Rename: so we could title the videos what we wanted
Hello Max, the ability to rename and reorganize video files would be a good feature to add to Mxtube 2. Also I submitted a bug report for Mxtube 1.0b The transport controls dont work when the iphone is connected to a external display using Apple’s latest composite video cable. That would also be great for version 2, thanks

firstly, thanks so much for mxtube, it is an awesome app
truthfully, there is only one thing i would say is an absolute need for mxtube 2: to solve the issue of premature ending of downloads. i have to try at least 30 times on a stable wifi connection before i can download a video larger than 3mb, because it keeps prematurely finishing. i know you say it is a youtube connection issue and i believe you, however isn’t there some way where instead of finishing the download, the app just temporarily pauses the download when it detects a connection failure?
some other features i would LIKE to see, however these are not necessities:
-simultaneous downloads (this would be very nice)
-being able to rename your files
-being able to view mxtube files in a separate folder in the videos of your ipod touch
-being able to pause and resume downloads
once again, though, please try to find a way to fix the premature downloading issue. other than that, the app is genius, and thank you very much for sharing it with the ipod touch user community!

Suggestions.
-ability to view the video full name (ver 1 has limited length)
-able to switch between thumbnail, list and detail view in the library.
-ablity to organize video into folders in the library (useful for people with a lot of videos).
-function to share videos with another iphone through wifi.
-covert download video to another format using ffmpeg
-pause download, reorganize download priority.
-restore download if the program crash. Currently if the program crash during download. All downloads will be cleared when the app is restarted.
-able to rotate video during playback
This a few is a few ideas you can work on for the next mxtube… cheers

mxtube v1 is great. It would be even better if when you exit the application, that it would stay on the same spot you left it as opposed to refreshing the application and sending you back to the home screen.
First, great app, and thanks for fixing the premature download termination issue. That was public enemy #1. Here’s some others:
1) resume downloads after crash (enabled by fixing #1?)
multitask - Multiple concurrent downloads, watch while downloading.
2) Search by youtube *username*…*please*
3) rotate to wide screen view to see more of the title and description text
4) keep the audio only playback (jump to resync upon resume)
5) once downloaded make video available in ipod video listings
5.5) make ipod videos playable (probaby automatic with #6?)
6) make *all* youtube videos available (transcoding of incompatible formats)
7) drag to re-order in Downloads view (requires resume for best results).
9) begin watching partial download
10) if playing in background (audio only) alter status bar as the phone app does (press to return to video)
11) open source, so I can submit patches for these features rather than pester your blog
I know that the YouTube app can do random seeks in files without having to do the whole download, so it seemed obvious that you should be able to do some kind of download resume with that. Glad you’ve figured it out.
this would make my day if you can sync the videos to your library. For me it would open a whole new world of fun

1.I would like to see the entire video (like youtube) but without down loading it just rendering
2. If in the middle of watching the video and I choose to download it I would like to comence downloading while finishing to watch the movie
3. If I watch the video on youtube it shows the information of the video I would. Like to view that
4. I would also like a shortcut of any downloaded video to be sent to my video file that can on my iPod
5. An estimated time remaining bar would also be awesome

I for one wish to keep my Youtube videos seperate from my videos folder. Can you make this an option. I would also like it to be possible to SSH into my MXTube folder in /var/mobile/media/MXTube and drop videos there from my computer. Thanks

REMEMBER SEARCH INPUT
- Resume downloads. If broken downloads on big HQ files cannot be fixed, resuming them is the next best option
- MXTube User Agreement can be disabled. I mean I can understand it being there the first 10 times you use the app but after that you’d think we’ve have gotten the picture and there’s no need to go through it everytime you restart the app (especially when the app tends to throw you out randomly for no reason sometimes when you search)
As long as premature download bug is fixed and videos are transferred to and playable in the iPod video app (and can be reverse synced if possible) then that’s all I really need. Thanks for a great app.

New features that would be great:
- persistent search results, and/or persistent download queue, in case download gets interrupted for some reason
- a display/check of what percentage of the download was achieved (and file size, so you know what to delete when you run out of memory)

hey i think i figured out how to keep downloads working till the very end. i tried it on a 27 meg video (dead fantasy II, AWSOME VIDEO IMO) and i found out that if you do a search in mxtube every 1-2 minutes, just a regular simple search, that it keeps the connection alive
i only tried it once, but after three previous attempts to just sit there and pray that the download finishes, i tried to just kinda poke the connection into staying alive, AND IT WORKED! hope this helps some of you who really wana get 100%

dude, you sould seriously be awarded a medal or something for this, the only thing i would add would be a thing that reads the history and favorites list from the origional youtube app. i usually like to watch a bunch of videos on that app and then try to download ones i remember, but it turns into a hassle… and i dont feel like going back and forth between my bookmarked videos and mxtube to download them
I would also like to be able to save any video to the homescreen
maybe even bookmark in case were not in wifi and we remember to download it later

I have been very busy lately. I am still planning mxtube2 before I start coding it. That way there are no bugs in this version. Please, keep posting features. When I get some time, I will choose the ones that have made it into the app so far.

I love this app.
Being able to organize or group videos into folders or albums would be very helpful. My son uses MXTube to play soccer videos of keepers to get into the headspace before each game.

currently I’m really pissed because when I do a search, play a video or sometimes even turn on mxtube, it jacks up and crashes. I then lose the download and/or search. I don’t know if its a bug or not, but when you read this, FIX THIS! It saves the user from the urge to chuck their iphone/ipod across the room.
i dont know if someone has already requedted it but i would really like to see youtube account support. I have a few ptivate videos on youtube that id like to be able to download to my iphone. This also valid other private videos that your friends share with you
A simple request.. We able to use folders in this app. Like bookmarks folders in safari. We can drag n drop videos to user created folders then. Tnx..
I still think it would be most helpful if a simple bugfix for the premature downloads could be released while all the other stuff was being worked on.

I know there is no option to download just audio, but a way to either only listen to it, or better, download the full video, but then only keep the sound (doubt it’s possible for the 2nd option but would be cool for music videos and live proformances).

MAKE THE DAMN THING STABLE FIRST
Sorry, but I can hardly run the thing for more than 30 seconds most of the time without it crashing, and it’s really hard for me to get anything downloaded.
The only feature I really want comes as a side effect of that - some awareness of what I’ve downloaded already so it doesn’t give me options to download the stuff I already have again (think, the 20 times after each crash, I repeat the same search, and download a couple more things I haven’t gotten yet).
A particularly deadly thing to do seems to be to start some downloads, and then click the “Load … more” link on the search results. That pretty much crashes it every time. Oh, and this nonsensery:

No disrespect meant - this is by far one of my favorite apps. But can you please focus on stability for a while?
Is there any way to make playback more stable via mxtube in some way ? Very often I will hit a clip to play in youtube and it just sits there doing very little. I find the same clip on mxtube and it starts to download with little problems.
Is there no way to stream to youtube via mxtube rather than from youtube to the youtube player directly ? Can mxtube not sit inbetween the two and act as a buffer ?
wow what a top5 app. This is what makes the ipod touch great.
would want different ways of organising clips in a database (similar to iphone music chooser -even better with coverflow like system!). Once you build up a few clips at the moment it is pretty hard to navigate. A library system would make this awsome…
Since the reverse sync cant work. How about have a function to save a list of prefered video to push into the ipod.app. Its better then painfully having to click every video after syncing with itunes.
In addition to the list of prefered video to push into the ipod.app. How about have a option to switch between manually or automatically push the list of videos once Mxtube 2 launch.

Fantastic app… but downloads suddenly quit for no apparent reason and my iphone resets sometimes while playing. Any way to fix these before adding new features?

- organize the Videos in folders, inside the app (i now have about 100 vids, difficult to find what im searching for…)
- create playlists
- rename
- Import yt bookmarks
- background playing and downloading
- continious playing

Because many of us are on hurry to get the new updated app. I suggest that you fix the main bugs for now and post it. Then, you may post the updates for the additional features on a later stage.

GREAT application! One of the very few jailbroken apps I use as much as the default apps. Seems alot of my suggestions are already noted but just like to help put in the votes.
When your in the videos section, I see there is a lil blank area near the top left corner, can you make it a search icon there so you can go find the one video out of many (I’m beginning to have a library here now), be much more easier than to flick flick flick your way through the page. Also, when you build up a bunch, can you have it get the contacts alphabetical tags on the side. Another option to scroll to what you want to see.
I was going to mention others, but it seems your already working on it so I’m glad to see that :D. Great work once again and can’t wait to see 2.0!

Please It was really inconvenience for me without Search History. Almost everytime I got hanged MxTube I need to re-key all my search term…….
when can mxtube 2 be downloaded for ipod touch/iphone???
The one feature I would love is a loop feature that would either repeat the same video over and over again or a shuffle feature.

One of the things its missing is the ability to merge videos.
for example, if ur watching a 30minute video you will have to download 3 parts. is it possible to merge the parts all into one video? that would save the time of downloading them all and having to watch the parts 1 at a time.

Real quick request that I would assume would be a given: please let MxTube send the videos to the Videos app for us iPod Touch users! I hope that’s possible if you don’t have a Touch to experiment with.
A quick update on where things were up too would be nice. Would take but a short minute. Is there a reason why a quick download interrupt bug fix cant be released before mxtube 2 ?
How long is development of 2 likely to take ? Days, weeks, months ?

My request for 2.0 is:
– ability to download through a network where http://www.youtube.com is blocked.
My university’s Wi-Fi blocks all requests to http://www.youtube.com. Despite this, the built-in Youtube.app is able to let me search & stream Youtube videos. However, MxTube doesn’t — searching fails, let alone downloading.
Maybe the YouTube.app accesses videos using a domain other than http://www.youtube.com. Can you also do this for MxTube?

first of all, i love your app! its definitely my favorite ever for the iphone. So I was thinking… I have this site where I watch the simpsons online for free, its called watchthesimpsonsonline.com. Anyway, what I wouldn’t give to be able to download the simpsons straight to my iphone and watch them at my leisure! this would be pure bliss! is it possible??
hi, its a shame that videos from other sites can’t be downloaded, but well, that’s that.. I guess it must have soething to do with how youtube encodes its videos. Its also a shame that audio only can’t be downloaded from youtube either.
But how about being able to download songs from seeqpod. For those of you who are not familiar with this, it’s a web site that works pritty much the same as youtube, only that with music. And, as well as youtube, it has a mobile version designed for the iPhone that links your browser to the .mp3 instead of loading a flash player. So if you can get mxtube to download videos from youtube, and send them to the iPod.app, then maybe you could get it to do the same with songs from seeqpod. And this ladys and gentleman, would be a lot like iTunes store, only that FREE!! Anyway, just an idea..

FANTASTIC app firstly, I love it and can’t stop using it. Full credit to u and your team for its development.
Like others, I’d love to see a ‘preview’ function in mxtube, would be nice to see a quick sample of what you’re about to download.
The only other change I’d like to see (don’t know if its been mentioned b4?), is continuous play and rearranging of your playlist? If u have a long list of videos, would be nice to watch them continuously as non-stop play? Possibly a fade out/fade in/crossover of videos perhaps? Even just the continuous play function would be brilliant? Then moving and shifting of your playlist would be great!! To touch and conveniently move videos around would be a nice feature?

One of my least favorite parts of youtube on iphones, not being able to see the full title or discription under search. Unsure how this could be fixed in MxTube’s case but it would be a great fix
Hey this is a sweet app. Can you give us an estamite on how long it will take u to make mxtube 2.0? make sure you spend enough time testing it. Now a few cool features would be able to download the videos into the video folder on the iPod.

I use mxtube to download songs and listen to them. It has been usefull since my computer is always getting viruses from limewire, ares, etc.
The only problem is that I have to start a new video after each one is done.
It would be cool if there was a way to keep the videos playing one after another. You could also add a shuffle button.

There has to be a way to get Veoh as a supported site, if this can be included in the next update I guarantee you’ll be known by all Iphone and Ipod Touch ANIME LOVERS around the world.
Few mandatory features for next version:
1. Sorting by name / downloaded / size / length
2. Grouping or folders
3. Rename of a downloaded video’s title
4. Quick find within downloaded videos
Oh and:
5. Filter already downloaded videos when searching YouTube
When you say you can send videos to the iPod app, does that mean when I go into videos I can watch them there? That would be awesome. Mxtube is amazing! Also how long do you think it will take to finish?

i would like to be able to add movies from mxtube2 to the regular videos app on my ipod, because when you want to upload videos from an app to an app, it usally has the optian of takng the video from the videos app,such as hidepod
EXAMPLE: on hidepod if you want to upload a video to hide pod, but hidepod only lets you upload videos to it from the videos app., not mxtube or youtube, hidepod is the problem here but mxtube2 could be the solution, and there would still be use for mxtube2, hidepod would not overtake it if you were thinking this, because people would only upload videos to hidepod that the wanted to hide.

if you want to upload a video to hidepod, but it only lets you upload videos to it from the videos app., not mxtube or youtube, then you can only upload videos from itunes, which alot of people rather do the whole thing on their iphone/ipods, making it alot easyier, but they can get youtube videos from itunes, so if mxtube2 allowed this feature, then we could get videos from youtube and hide them in hidepod.hidepod is the problem here but mxtube2 could be the solution

at first of all, i love MxTube, it’s genius.
New features, I’d like to see to be implanted in MxTube 2 could be:
- A possiblity to move Videos from MxTube to the Videos Library
- View & Add Commets to Videos on YouTube

If it is imposible to make this itunes sync able woulndt it b a possability to mod cute ftp pro to go straight to -var/mobile/media/MxTube
If there any possibilities to make video download continue in the background while opening an other app (making advantage of the multitasking capabilities of OSx).

How about syncing with itunes?
hi max I love the program and can’t wait till mxtube 2 but for some reason a couple of days ago I tried to download a video and it went to the homescreen then I tried the Same video with low quality and both but it still didn’t work. Then I tried a different video and it still sent me back to the homescreen I dont know if this is wat caused it but right before that I downloaded summerboard. Do u have a way to fix this or will it be fixed in mxtube2?
hey r u going to have 2 pay for the newer version of mx tube or will you still be able to download it free from installer or cydia packager. This would be great and mx tube1 is already awesome I can’t wait for the new one. Updates i would like are full titles , a queue, and FULL descriptions
hey so far people have listed a lot of good ideas. I think it would be cool if we could make categories to put saved your videos in. For example you could make a music folder and a football video folder so you don’t have to scan through a 1000000 videos to find the one your looking for, this would also help the sluggish performance when scrolling for your videos. Thanks a lot keep up the good work man and I hope you realese it for free and for jailbreakin iPods beacause where the ones who need it since are original utube app didn’t work. Plus I don’t feel like paying $20 for the sdk update.
Mx tube is a nice app but if downloading other movies from websites like tuodo,youkou,redtube etc…..it would be much much much better than mx tube 1….

Videos in the iPod.app
you refer to the idea of displaying the downloaded videos in the videos.app, if it’s that so, then im happy, but if is not, would be nice to put all the videos (the dowloaded and the normal videos) in the same screen, please consider that.
Hi Max, just wanted you to know that you’re doing a fantastic job. Creating an application such as this is JUST perfect. i was wondering if you could add somethings :

to be able to organize viedos ( as i dowload anime and like to have them in order)
and the most inportan one of all to be able to see the full title of the viedo ur dowloading ( as alot of anime is relly long names like full metal alcimiset, neon revoliton ( think that spelt rong lol))

Can you make ‘folders’ to organize downloaded vids cos my folders getting kinda messy. If u do that, mxtube would probably replace utube (for me)

My little advice…here
1. Prevent the auto exit bug* (Which also will left the unfinished temp file inside iphone…)
2. Entering the sleep mode still keep the Wifi on, and keep downloading.
3. enable to search the Adult content from Youtube (Which means, first login to Youtube with your own account, and enable to download the 18+ contents)

I absolutely love mxtube. I just downloaded it because I wanted to save a specific clip and it works perfectly. Its sleek, simple and works perfectly. I love how it tells you how large the file is and how much exactly has been downloaded.
The extra options look amazing especially pausing downloads.
Adding the speed of the download an estimated time remaining would also be brilliant.

I love mxtube for my iPod touch I like it because of rewarching videos on no wireless for improvements is there anyway to search by the maker of the video to see if they have more of video u like and categories
All the featues sound amazing but id still like to see a playlist feature , for example, i have downloaded lee evans xl tour but its in 15 parts and they are in 1,10,11,12,13,14,15,2,3… Sort of order which as would imagine is quite annoyin. Also if u do add a playlist featues then an option to resume playlist or something along them lines thanks
I am using MX TUBE as my personal MTV Station.
can you please make it possible to continously play all videos, and also shuffle. This way, when go to parties, I can video DJ right from my pocket

it would be really helpful if there was a feature where you can organize the downloaded videos, like into folders or something. i have tons of videos that i download, and at times it is impossible for me to find the ones i want to watch
first and foremost thankyou, for putting in the countless hours and days/
weeks to put this together, especially seeing as it’s easier now to download vids with my iphone than my pc. From what I’ve read you’ve made it clear downloading from other site is impossable, would it me possible to input raw URL links and use a download and file manager to manage them or possibly catching links from safari, that would make your program appeal to a wider audience I think, well enough so to attract attention from firms with deep pockets and an interest in gobbling up intelectual property. Seeing as safari lacks any useful purpose outside of browsing, you take up that slack and get noticed by anyone interested in a proper Internet enabled mobile device, again thanks for the app keep up the good work and please don’t go broke buying jolt cola : )
