MxTube….
Posted on March 7th, 2008 by Max
Glad to hear everyone liking MxTube so far, I am working on fixing many bugs as we speak. Just a note, this application will not work on 1.0.x, It requires a couple methods that came in version 1.1.1 I will be setting up a bug tracking system soon, but until then please do not email me or post comments with bugs that have been found.

EDIT: MxTube 1.0b now supports 1.0.x firmware.
Thanks for making MxTube, it’s very useful. Would it be possible to download the videos straight to the iPhone movies folder? Currently, MxTube downloads to /private/var/mobile/Media/MxTube/ but could it be downloaded to /private/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music/…?
Glad a fix is on the way, only downloading half a vid is useless.. cant wait for the update !
I’ll try to answer Benjamin…
Yes it’s possible but it still won’t appear in the iPhone’s videos list in the iPod app since the app reads a database written by iTunes on syncing to know which music and videos are on the iPhone. There should be a way for mxtube to modify that database though. But I guess that it would be erased again on next sync with iTunes. That’s why the developers will find a way to sync back to iTunes first before trying to change the database and place the videos in the location you mentioned.
I hope I’m right…
So… Ye, mxtube is amazing. Harder faster better stronger than the youtube app. Can’t wait for the bugs to be fixed and the new features added.
Man, please add a feature to download ONLY audio!
like that we will be able to save video clips as songs immedeately
no limewire and conversions will be needed!!!!
also could you add a feauture so that videos will be automaticaly imported into our ipod/itunes video gallery??
thanks!
Point your iPod/iPhone here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/
BBC have launched a beta iPlayer stream support for iPhone.
I wonder whether MxTube could be extended to work with iplayer ?
Hi, Fantastic app , its great. Just waiting for some bugfixes now. If you want a beta tester let me know and I would be will ing to help.
yeah, that would be gr8!!!
also, if you could add a feauture for downloading ONLY audio, not video.. it would be gr8, we could just rip the video clips into songs from utube!!
what is the source
I couldn’t find it via Installer
i even added modmyifone source and many known others, but still it seems not appearing to me..
any idea?
Thanks in advance
I think your software is one of the best homebrew apps made to work natively on the iphone..
You work is impressive and should be supported.
I’ve donated a small amount money and hope for more updates!
Thank you!
To Mr. Benjamin Fulton :
The videos must be first passed to iTunes and sync’ed to the iPhone so the MobilePlayer reads the proper xmls to find the videos stored inside iphone’s disk!
It’s not as easy as it seems plus there is no easy way to append lines to the database file that the iTunes makes and MobilePlayer reads!
please clean tbe bugs on version 1.0. So far it’s the best app for iphone. But i cant download a full clip :(. My downloads stol at 80% or it crashes :((
thanks for creating mx tube, its great, but there seems that when downloading like 4 mins videos for example the videos in high resolution crashes, and cannot be watched entirely, hope you can fix this.
cheers
sorry for the comment, didnt read ur message oops
HURRY!!!! im dying for this app….
Thanks you
for creating one of the best apps!!
I hope u will release update version soon
if it possible u can just fix “crashing when download large file” and let us updated it.
can anybody write down the source??!?! please
can u make this app for the app store
what was fixed in the release that came out today ?? 1.01b or something.
I saw it in installer as an update and thought YAY !!! installed it and still cant download full movies
Great app!!! works pretty good on my itouch , has its little problems here and there but IT WORKS!?!!? I would love to donate but dont have paypal so……
Hey there!
Nice work and really helpful application.
Will donate when big downloads wont crash anymore and files can be played in the youtube player.
Gratz from Germany!
And of course please add video descriptions!
I saw the update 0.1b in the installer.app! testing now. Hope fix the download break problem!
No, got the same probs with downloading big files…crashes after quite a time…
Would be nice if the coder writes down which bugs were fixed with this update.
excellent app will be donating to this
Great App. Thanks a lot.
I added other flv videos via some adult youtube type sites and added them to the phone. This was a bit tedious as I had to rename the flv extension to a mp4, Create a THM, or thumbnail file for the same, and finally add the new file’s details to the .plist xml file!
worked great but was a real long task. do you think there you will develop a program to add downloaded flv files (because youtube can only display so much) via a pc or mac with the method i just described!? do let me know. Thanks from Dubai!
By the way:
Another problem is, that search results doesn´t match with the original youtube search results. For example if you search for “GSNVideos” you get 107 on youtube an only 62 on MxTube.
Thank you for this app, but will you release again the web version?
I need it because my iphone has lost the baseband and I can’t use wifi.. so I have to download the videos on the pc and sync via iTunes to the iphone
Fine would be to search for the YouTube URL too…e.g. to put the individual code of a YouTube Video in the SearchBox:
Example: “SFj0xlzmf6Q” for this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SFj0xlzmf6Q
Great work.
What would really be a killer is if you could also allow download of BBC iPlayer videos.
The iPh/iPoT version of iPlayer loads the video into the normal Quicktime player. Could your app be altered to enable episode search via the iPlayer website search and then drag the video down as per youtube?
Or as a minimum, could you add facility for a person to enter a URL of a video, or grab a video from safari cache??
Thanks,
Dam
Would really make it a killer.
any chance of getting this to work with crunchyroll.com? they have h264 flash videos so it would be extremely handy, many thanks!
nice programm but crash after 5 sec playback…
I was wondering if the source is available to public.. plus i volunteer for translation to Greek language if you want!
I just need to know if there is something we can do to help other than donating only!
Greetz from Greece!
It will be a good app, but I just uninstalled it. It doesn’t make sense to ask for donation for a app that can’t download a full video from youtube, and you call it a 1.0 release? Please, at most, it’s just a 0.6 beta.
First of all if you read the bug report on the featured page you would understand why downloads finish early, and why there is nothing I can do to fix it. Second, who are you to tell me how to version my app? Its my app (and its free) I can do whatever I want and I don’t need anyone’s approval especially not yours. Third, donations are what help me get the resources to make apps like this better. If you have a problem with it now, don’t expect me to improve it at all especially with negative comments like these.

“you would understand why downloads finish early, and why there is nothing I can do to fix it”
You say its because of using Edge, I never use edge, only my home WiFi and vids never download properly for me either unless I choose low quality, but damn, it should be called horrid blocky quality, it just way to low, without high quality working its useless to a lot of people I guess.
Its not necessarily edge but a slow connection. On the few videos I could replicate this bug, it was only when downloading High quality videos on edge. Please show me a high quality video that produces this bug on wifi. Once I can replicate the error on wifi I can work on a fix if possible.

PS: Try running these two commands before starting up MxTube:
rm -rf /var/root/Library/Caches
rm -rf /var/mobile/Library/Caches

Is there a way to ssh into the iphone and get the downloaded video to a PC/Mac?
If you have already downloaded some videos, do you have to have a WiFi signal to view them. Or can you view them anytime? No matter what. Even if your not in a good spot or moving somewhere?
when using youtube or mxtube the colors are distored

rm -rf /var/root/Library/Caches

you need to download an application called ”Putty” get it here http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html
once you have downloaded it and installed it open it up. your user name will be root
your password will be alpine
when you input your password the curser will not look like anything is being typed but it is dont worry.
then when it is open you need to copy the commands that max has given you to putty one at a time.then type reboot
any questions just e-mail me qdarkshine@aol.com hope you dont mind me giving my e-mail out max,i will be giving a donation soon as my paypal is up and running.
this might be a silly question, but how can I delete a video that I downloaded?
sometimes you need to do.
thanks
Not a silly question waleed,
go into mxtube press videos then at the top right hand corner is the ”edit” button hit that then you will see res banner marks on your videos, just press the red banner marks on the videos you want to delete.
thanks

is there any way that you can make all the videos play one after another with out having to select the video individualy.like a playlist or somthing
I have MxTube v1.0b and i am running it on a 1.1.1 itouch. I have no trouble out of MxTube except for the ocasional freeze up. Try this though… I have noticed MXtube crashes if you download more than one video at once or search for videos while a video is already downloading. So after starting a video download don’t search for more videos or start another download until the first one is done. When MxTube does crash I just double tap the Home Button and click Music and from there i click the home button again to exit to the springboard (home screen for newbies). For those who do not have this app i Reccomend downloading it.
Here are some different sources for this great app:
